The unshakeable status of Pride and Prejudice by Sunny

The unshakeable status of Pride and Prejudice by Sunny

Even Pride and Prejudice has been published for hundreds of years; it still retains its fascination for modern readers. Pride and Prejudice offers us a tantalizing glimpse of the Regency Era, the fashionable society of Jane Austen's days. The romance, family life or England country life depicting in the book are the essential elements. But to maintain its status over centuries, I’m sure that it’s not just the above elements that contributing its fame. Therefore as for the following article, I’m going to share my view points.

For many people’s appeal to Pride and Prejudice can be narrowed down to two words, “Mr. Darcy”, and me either. The first time I read it, I couldn’t but picture in my mind that this handsome but arrogant man. The portrait of Mr. Darcy conforms to young girls’ Prince Charming, cool, handsome and wealthy. Moreover, the twice times that Darcy proposed to Elizabeth melt more people’s hearts. Even if his first proposal was with highly pride, his courage was undeniable. His second proposal: “You must know. Surely you must know it was all for you,” or “My affections and wishes have not changed,” upon hearing these words, people can’t but melt in their romance story. To this point, I believe that novels or movies that retain a great popularity are mixed with romance, which can be found in Jane Austen’s other books, Emma and Sense and Sensibility

Of course, the creation of characters did appeal to people, but the humorous dialogues are another basic element whicd provides us the England country speaking style, especially diologues between Mr. Bennet and Mrs. Bennet. Mr. Bennet seems to be an intelligent man who withdraws from the society; on the other hand, Mrs. Bennet is frivolous and is given much thought to the marriages of her daughters. The sparkle between these two people having little in common is funny. Nevertheless, Mrs. Bennet’s public manners sometimes embarrass Mr. Bennet, Jane and Elizabeth, which I consider to be vivid which can not only fit in Jane’s days, but even in nowadays. When reading the book, I laughed at what Mrs. Bennet did, but a good mother is definitely like this way, which is always worrying about her children, which is hoping her children’s marriage with happiness, even the happiness is built under money. Thinking this way, wouldn’t Mrs. Bennet play a durable role in this book?

Besides, Pride and Prejudice offer us to learn more about Regency Era, giving us a chance to take a look at the society at that time. By depicting their daily life, Jane Austen provide a real and clear outlook on Regency Era.

When talking about Jane Austen's novels, poeple's first impression on it would be love and family relationship. Few will recognize some other elements that retains its status over centuries.  Hoping that after sharing my view points, you'll have more ideas of this tantalizing book.

Pride and Prejudice

I have seen this movie for many times. I still remember the first time to watch the movie because of the writing homework, and I focused on the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Lizzie. How two people who were not in their eyes would love each other?

Mrs. Bennet, a mother who has five daughters, tried to find rich men for her daughters with many ways. In the times, if you want to live a better life, the only way you can do is marrying a rich man. However, the class between the rich and the poor is clear to see. In the ball, you can tell the rich and the poor by their clothes and their daily action. The bias between them is also clear to realize, and now, we still have the bias on others. For example, classify students by their grades. Those who are in the good university, and they are good students. On the other hand, students who are in a bad university, and they are bad students. In fact, it’s not a good way to judge a student’s goodness and badness by their grades. Never judging a book by its cover is always correct.

In Pride and Prejudice, the author, Jane Austen, described the peoples’ characteristic very clearly. The title, Pride and Prejudice, also talks the whole story line. A man who is pride and a woman who has the prejudice on the pride man don’t like each other at the first glance in the ball. Day after day, when Lizzie knows what Mr. Darcy has done for her family, she realizes that he is not pride at all. Besides, the reason for Mr. Darcy doing this is that he thinks Lizzie is not a girl who is not as greed as her mother. He thinks she is different, and the truth is it, she is not like her mother. At the first, no one would think they would fall in love with each other, but they are together at the end of the story. When I watch the movie, I would think they are so stupid because they would never know that the right person is just by your side. How can’t you take the chance and tell him or her “I love you”, something like this.

There are many reasons for me to love this movie. The other factor is that the times, the regency times. From the ball, you can understand what the English country dance is. Their dance may be a little bit funny but not ridiculous at all. It can be also grace. Their clothes are also a thing that can be studied. The waist line of the clothes in the times is below the chest. Look at the waist line of the clothes in our times, and you can know that it’s at our waist. It had different sense of where the waist live is.

I really like this movie. Each time, I watch the movie, and I would have different thoughts from the conversations and their love relationships. It definitely gives me different thoughts each time. I think I would watch the movie for many times after the class. I also strongly recommend that everyone should watch the movie not only for the love relationship (it may be the main reason for me to watch this movie) but also for the other factors, such as peoples’ characteristics, dances, music’s, and how to marry a rich man.

Legally Blonde

Watching movies almost can be one part of my life. Movies not only entertain me but teach me something which doesn’t exist in textbooks. Here I want to introduce the movie Legally Blonde.

Elle Woods is a charming girl who has a blond hair. She is dumped by her boyfriend, Warner Huntington because she is not born in a famous family and she is not serious enough. She decides to study at Harvard law school in order to find her lover back. But after getting into the college, she discovers that Warner has engaged with his ex-girlfriend met in senior high school. It makes her feel sad and finally she decides to forget the bad man and study harder to improve that she won’t be defeated easily.

After studying harder than before, she not only gets the great chance to be an intern in her professor’s office but also helps her first client to win the case.
In the end of the movie, Elle is hired to work at most prestigious law firms in Boston. Her ex-boyfriend, Warner, wants to restart the love-relationship with her, but she refuses.
I find three messages which this movie wants to tell the audience. The first one is a proverb “Where there is a will, there is a way”, the second one is”Don’t judge people by appearance”, and the last one is “faith in yourself is very important”.
Every one regards Elle as a beautiful Barbie, even her parents; nobody believes that she can get in to Harvard Law School, but finally she does. When she helps her first client to prove her innocence, no one believes she can be successful, but finally she does as well. Whenever I finish watching the movie, I am inspired very much. Elle is a good model rule for me; she inspires me to keep studying hard.

Someone said that the American regard girls with blonde hair are brainless vase before, but I think Elle has broken this rumor. She not only gets into Harvard Law School which is one of top three university in America but also does a good job on her study and work. Finally, she becomes a good lawyer. I think appearance is not the most important thing to know a person; the important thing is one’s personality and behavior. If people who have good-looking faces but don’t respect others, they won’t be loved.

On Elle’s commencement, she says that”you must always have faith in yourself.” We have to believe ourselves that we can achieve everything if we really want.
I really like this movie which is full of pink and interesting. We can not only have fun but also learn something from this movie.

Cape #7 (海角七號) V.S. No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti (不能沒有你)

Cape #7 (海角七號) & No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti (不能沒有你)

When we are touched, most of us express our thoughts or convey our feelings by talking, writing, and drawing. Movie, however, is also a way to convey a person’s thought.  Most of the movies people see in Taiwan are from foreign countries instead from Taiwan. We accept those foreigners’ thoughts, we admire their movie technology; nevertheless, we seldom pay attention to our local ones.  However, start from 2008, the situation seems changes. I still remember during the summer vacation in 2008, everybody was discussing about Cape #7 (海角七號). It was the first time people discussed so enthusiastically about a local-made movie. Cape #7 was such a hit not only in Taiwan but also in Japan. It was also the masterpiece that proved Taiwanese movie with good quality and a huge encouragement to the younger generations. Though it was not the first movie made by Taiwanese and produced in Taiwan, it was the first one that successfully captured people’s attentions and people’s minds. Following this great mess fervor, more and more young directors have the courage to express their thoughts by shooting movies. And in 2009, another great masterpiece was produced —No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti (不能沒有你). It was also a local-made movie produced by a Taiwanese director— 戴立忍. The reason why I choose these two movies is because I find two of them are much alike. Therefore, in my following research paper, I would like to make a comparison between these two movies and express my own reflection toward what I have seen in both movies.

What exactly the ingredients and the qualities these two movies posses to win peoples’ hearts? I believe the answers are obviously clear.  Start from the director’s motivations to plots arrangement and even the election of actors and actresses…etc, all of the above decide whether or not a good movie can be presented. I will divide these ingredients into three parts— the director, the plots, and the actors /actresses— and analyze them individually to find out why these two movies can be such a great success.

I.    The director— 魏德聖 and 戴立忍

The director plays an important role during the shooting of the film. Though the director doesn’t represent the whole movie, without the director’s ideas and the passion, the movie will be nothing. The reason why both movies— Cape #7 and No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti can be such a success should be credited to director魏德聖 and director戴立忍. I find that both of them have their own insistence and passion toward “Movie.” First, take Director魏 as an example, actually, Cape #7 was the first production of his. Though spent a lot of money during the whole movie which even made him in debt, he deeply believed that he should make every detail perfect. From a scene which only took  three minutes to the whole setting, Director魏insisted to make them all right. He believed in what he was doing; even though no one seemed to support his ideas at really first; his own insistence proved that what he did was right. I guess this is what I and all of the students can learn from— believe firmly in what you have chosen even though nobody will support. Sometimes I find myself wavering in one decision. But maybe I should have more faith and belief in what I have chosen.

As to Director戴, he notices what most of people might ignore, which is the life of urban dwellers and minorities. Though we live in this surrounding and care for those who are in need, we might sometimes feel numb in our daily life once we get used to it. We sometimes forget how urgent their lives are and urgent they need the public’s helps. However, Director戴 points out this problem. He notices those who really need people’s helps and cares. That’s why he films this movie-- No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti, which is a true story between a father and a daughter. Also, during the interview, he expresses his ideas that as a director, he wishes to present what is really happening in Taiwan; what is really true about Taiwan. This strong belief leads him does what he believes in and stands out conspicuously in shooting the movie No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti.

II.    The plots

The plot matters in a film. Whether a film is good or bad depends on its plot.  The plot of Cape #7 includes not only love between A- Ga and Tomoko and the Japanese teacher and old Tomoko but the friendship between A-Ga and his friends. What I love most is that in this film, not only does A-Ga find his own confidence back, he also helps 馬拉桑, 茂伯, 大大, 水雞…find theirs. I am also touched when in the end A-Ga finds the address and delivers those letters to the old Tomoko; it seems everything has its perfect ending. Besides, during the movie, most of the characters communicate in Taiwanese; this makes the movie much friendlier to the audience, especially like my parents. My mom, who always sleeps during the movies, didn’t sleeps at all during Cape #7. Actually, my mom kept laughing; because she understood the language that was why she felt interested.

As to the movie No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti, through this movie, Dr.戴 presents a social incident that people have long forgotten about the story between a father and a daughter years ago. Due to some complex reasons, the daughter’s identity cannot be proved legally by the law, which also influences the legality of the relationship between the father and daughter. To legalize their father and daughter relationship, this father turns to the official; however, in vain. At the end, the desperate father has no choice but turn to the extreme way which is to commit suicide to raise the public’s attention. After seeing this movie, I feel touched but a little bit shamed. I feel shamed because I seldom notice the social events like this before. However, I am touched because there are seldom movies that can truly reflect Taiwanese society and thank god that finally this father and daughter can reunite with each other. Besides, as to the setting, though it’s black and white and has no beautiful clothes nor gorgeous settings or backgrounds, it truly records the life, the emotion, and the helplessness of a Taiwanese man who belongs what so called the minority. It is so touched. As I mentioned that there are seldom movies that can truly present “real”; how nice it is to have a chance to enjoy the real life after indulging ourselves with so many unreal materials for so long.

III.    The actors and actresses

I find both of the movies in common that most of their actors and actresses are not stars, celebrities, or artistes. Nor are they famous because some of them haven’t really acted before.  However, they all act really well in these two movies. Though they are inexperienced actors and actresses, in other words, they’re like white papers and have more potential to develop their inner emotions and abilities. They won’t have any previous burden as those experienced actors and actresses; as a result, they can explore themselves without limits. That’s why they perform so well in the movies. I think that’s parts of the reason why they are chosen.

Both of the two movies are the masterpieces of Taiwan which also represent the spirit of Taiwan. We can see the value from these two movies; we can also find our own position from these masterpieces. However, we should remember one thing that as Taiwanese students, we should be proud of ourselves. Except from these two movies, there are also many other famous thumbs and authorities whom Dr. Vinia had mentioned in the class we can be proud of and learn from. All in all, we are so lucky to be born in Taiwan and enjoy such happy lives. We should cherish those resources and try to do our best. Hope one day, some of us can also be like those people who have contributed a lot to our home country.
